What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a permanent, effective way for patients living in Fountain Hills and the surrounding areas to replace missing teeth and restore their smiles. The implants, which look like specialized screws, are surgically inserted into your jaw, and then a tooth is created over the top of the implant.

How do Tooth Implants Work?
There are three parts to a dental implant procedure: the implant itself, which is permanently attached to your jaw, the abutment, which is the connector for your new tooth, and the dental crown, which is the prosthetic tooth you can see.
At the first visit, the dentist surgically places the implant into your jawbone. After the implantation, it will take some time for your jawbone to heal around the implant. This process, in which your bone ‘knits’ into the implant matrix, is called osseointegration. Not disturbing the implant during this process is key to allowing the bone to grow around it firmly and hold it in place, which helps provide a solid base for your new artificial tooth.
Once the implant has successfully healed and integrated, it’s time for an expertly crafted replacement tooth by Dr. Laskis. For a single-tooth implant placement, Dr. Laskis can customize a new tooth for our Fountain Hills and Rio Verde patients.

When is Bone Grafting Required?
If your jawbone isn’t thick enough or is too soft, you may need bone grafting before you can have dental implant surgery. That’s because the powerful chewing action of your mouth exerts great pressure on your bone, and if it can’t support the implant, the surgery would likely fail.
A bone graft can create a more solid base for the dental implant placement. It may take several months for the transplanted bone to grow enough new bone to support a dental implant. In some cases, you may need only minor bone grafting, which can be done at the same time as the dental implant surgery. The condition of your jawbone determines how you proceed.

Be Cautious About “Mini Dental Implants”
Some dentists also advertise “mini dental implants,” which are simply smaller-diameter implants that are not appropriate for some situations. Some General Dentists like Mini Dental Implants because they can place the implant themselves rather than referring the patient to a specialist for the surgery needed for larger-diameter implants.
